Our friends had to leave for work at 7:00 am, so we had the apartment to ourselves until mid-afternoon. We decided to make it a day of leisure which included reading, watching netflix, and of course a nap for me. It was wonderful. We also bonded with our friend's pug, Fionna. Aquilena got home from work and we headed to the downtown area of Mayaguez. A lot had already closed for Christmas Eve. In fact, the one panaderia that we found open closed shortly after we left. I got myself some cheese of the country. I had had it at the restaurant in San Juan and wanted to eat it again before I left. We headed back up to the apartment and Aquilena made me empanadas de queso (cheese). Now emapanadas de queso are my favorite and I'll tell you a little secret. I could have eaten those at every meal while we were here and been blissfully happy. The one Christmas food that I was stoked about were the traditional Venezuelan hallacas. After supper we watched ELF. Dave and I had brought our Christmas movies down here to share with our friends. In Puerto Rico, they shoot off fireworks on Christmas Eve, not at midnight, pretty much anytime throughout the evening. And they have parties. We could hear the music from the city below. It was a different kind of Christmas Eve, but these are how wonderful memories are made.
